In a historic ceremony held at the Ulima Central Auditorium, Julio Velarde, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, was awarded an honorary doctorate—the University’s highest distinction—in recognition of his outstanding career and lasting contributions to the Peruvian and Latin American economies.
With this distinction, Velarde joins a distinguished legacy of global leaders and thinkers who have received an honorary doctorate from Universidad de Lima, including Mario Vargas Llosa (1997), Fernando Belaunde Terry (2001), Javier Pérez de Cuéllar (2004), Mijaíl Gorbachov (2004), and Lech Wałęsa (2007).
Rector Patricia Stuart highlighted that the tribute to Julio Velarde transcends the academic sphere and represents a national milestone. “Through his integrity, leadership, and contributions to Peru’s macroeconomic stability, he stands as an inspiration for future generations. In honoring him, Universidad de Lima also reaffirms its commitment to excellence,” she stated.
Pedro Grados Smith, Director of the Graduate School, noted that Velarde’s professional trajectory has helped build confidence in the country’s future through the economic stability achieved during his leadership. He also underscored Velarde’s commitment to freedom, responsibility, and solidarity—values that align with the spirit and mission of Universidad de Lima.
During his acceptance speech, Velarde expressed his gratitude to the University: “Receiving this degree is a tremendous honor. I feel privileged to join the group of distinguished figures recognized before me, and I accept it as a renewed commitment to the country and to future generations.”
An economist by training, Julio Velarde has served as Chair of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru since 2006, earning international recognition for his leadership in monetary policy, institutional autonomy, and the strengthening of Peru’s financial system, even amid global economic crises.
Through this distinction, Universidad de Lima recognizes Dr. Velarde’s academic and professional excellence, as well as his contributions to strengthening economic stability, institutional confidence, and long-term vision in Peru.
