CHESS

CHESS

“Chess is more than a game. It is an intellectual diversion that has some art and a lot of science. It is also a means of social and intellectual rapprochement.”

José Raúl Capablanca, World Chess Champion, 1921-1927

With these words, the legendary Cuban chess master offers a definition of chess, an ancient game that has stood the test of time not only as a recreational activity but also as a discipline that continues to grow worldwide. Today, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) regulates the sport at all levels and across age and gender categories.

The benefits of playing chess are well known. In addition to fostering intellectual skills, it is an excellent educational tool for children, encouraging them from an early age to develop reasoning based on calculation, comparison, and abstraction. These skills ultimately contribute to decision-making and help develop mechanisms that can be applied in everyday life.

At the university level, students can continue practicing this fascinating game and science, as the University encourages participation in university, youth, and internal competitions, among other events.
