Miércoles de Ingeniería: Discrete and continuum mechanics. Challenges and opportunities

Nowadays, it is well established that scientific theories are a powerful tool for societal development. As an instance, the great technological development of the Age of Enlightenment was based on solid mathematical foundations. In this talk it will be argued how two opposite theoretical approaches in mechanics, namely discrete and continuous, can be both profitably employed and developed to advance different fields of engineering. Some applications of these approaches will be presented making reference to metamaterials engineering and civil engineering.

The first part of the conference will be held in English without translation. The second part will be in Spanish.
